 Novel epidemiological tools for the surveillance of wildlife diseases

Description:
The purpose of this one-day workshop is to provide interested people with the opportunity to discover modern applications used at various steps of disease surveillance, presented by scientists that have been implicated in the design and use of these tools. It will end by a round table aimed at linking the presentations and thinking about how these tools could be applied to improve wildlife health surveillance systems.

Program:

There will be oral presentations on the following topics:

1)          Capture of data on cases and real time transmission in the field, via cell-phones or PDA and satellites;

2)          Choice of pathogens of interest for surveillance with a flexible tool integrating scientific knowledge;

3)          Laboratory analysis of wildlife samples for diagnosis on pathogens (micro-array technology for DNA and for serology);

4)          Database design for wildlife disease surveillance;

5)          Database output: real time data mapping technology;

6)          Applying syndromic surveillance to wildlife health data;

7)          Analytical data analysis with GIS tools for risk indicators, applied to important wildlife diseases;

The workshop will finish with a round table:

Discussion on the use of these tools to improve wildlife disease surveillance systems, with a special regard to integration of data from multiple sources and the design of a European system.

Organizers:

The workshop is organized by members of the epidemiology and public health department of VetAgro Sup (former National Veterinary School of Lyon), France, with input from members of the Veterinary and Agrochemical Research Centre, Belgium. It is linked to a research project called « WildTech », on novel technologies for surveillance of emerging and re-emerging infections of wildlife, which is funded since 2009 by the European Union.

Target audience:
The workshop is targeted on managers of wildlife disease surveillance systems and wildlife epidemiologists, and should help them to improve the information their systems produce.

Duration:
one day, starting at 11.00 AM
